Norfolk Southern Ex-Southern

Built in 1965 in a series of 100 for Southern Railway, this bulkhead flatcar with Barber Roller Bearing trucks was used in pulpwood service, and also featured upright bunks along the sides. Today, NS is one of the largest Class 1 Railroads with over 30,000 employees and operates nearly 22,000 miles of track in the Eastern and Midwestern United States.

Chesapeake & Ohio®
Road Number 362734

Built in 1966, this covered gondola with Barber Roller Bearing trucks was equipped for steel bar loading. Chessie System was formed through the 1972 mergers of Chesapeake & Ohio, Baltimore & Ohio, and Western Maryland. It remained one of the largest East coast railroads until 1986 when Seaboard System merged with Chessie to form today’s rail giant, CSX Transportation.

Western Pacific®
Road Number 1124

This 10,044-gallon capacity tank car with Archbar trucks was built in January of 1913, and advertises compliance with the Master Car Builders Association, allowing the car to be interchanged. Western Pacific was a Class 1 Railroad formed in 1903 in order to offer another rail option to the established Utah routes of the Southern Pacific. WP was acquired in 1982 by Union Pacific Railroad.

Canadian National
Road Number 557579

A Class 1 railroad is defined as any railroad with annual revenue of more than $504,803,294 (the 1992 threshold of $250 million, set by the ICC, adjusted for inflation). There are six Class 1 Railroads operating in the United States; BNSF, CSX, CN, CPKC, NS and UP. The Union Pacific, founded in 1862, continues to operate today as one of the largest Class 1 railroads in North America with over 32,000 miles of track.

Sabine River & Northern ex-Cadiz Railroad
Road Number 1914

This car with Barber Roller Bearing trucks was built for the Cadiz Railroad, and was later obtained by the Sabine River & Northern. SRN is a short line in Texas that primarily hauls pulpwood and finished paper products from mills and finishing plants. SRN has connections with both BNSF and Union Pacific. To encourage the return of the boxcars, short line railroads, like Port Huron, could charge a per diem, or daily fee, until the cars were returned.

These 8,000-gallon capacity insulated tank cars with Bettendorf trucks were built for Shippers Car Line and was designed for vinyl acetate service. They featured a new welded dome design, called “Duradome,” replacing older riveted designs. Shippers Car Line was acquired by American Car & Foundry in 1927, and leased an enormous fleet of tank cars to a diverse assortment of industries, from chemical plants to wine processors.

Canadian Pacific

This Canadian Pacific boxcar with Barber Roller Bearing trucks was built by Greenbrier in July of 1998 and was used for wood pulp service. It features rectangular vent covers on the exterior of the car, allowing moisture from the wood pulp to escape the car, preventing product damage and rust inside the car. Incorporated in 1881, Canadian Pacific Railway is one of the largest Class 1 Railroads in Canada, owning over 12,000 miles of track in Canada and the United States.

Chicago & North Western®

Built in the 1910s, this outside braced boxcar with Bettendorf trucks was serviced in 1958 at the Marshalltown Shops and featured the large “Route of the 400” logo. Founded in 1859, the Chicago & North Western quickly grew into a large Class 1 railroad headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. C&NW is now part of Union Pacific, exclusively a freight railroad with over 32,000 miles of track.

These 50’ boxcars with Roller Bearing trucks were built by Pullman-Standard in the late 1960’s and featured a cushioned underframe and DF loaders. Founded in 1938 through a merger of the Gulf, Mobile & Northern and the Mobile & Ohio railroads, GM&O became a medium-sized Class I railroad with a main line between Mobile, Alabama; Kansas City, Kansas; and Chicago, Illinois.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe Weathered 5-pack

In early 1991, Burlington Northern received an order of 16 single Husky-Stack cars from Gunderson, accommodating containers up to 48’ in the lower well position. These were rolled into the BNSF fleet a few years later after the 1995 merger. The Husky-Stack® well car was first introduced in 1990 at the International Intermodal Expo in Atlanta, GA.

Alaska Railroad Heavyweight 3-Pack

Alaska Railroad is a Class II railroad that was founded in 1914, and was completed in 1923. It currently runs between Seward and Fairbanks along 656 miles of track. The ARR serves numerous communities with both freight and passenger service to this day, and is a major tourist attraction in the summer months. In 2023, the ARR celebrated 100 years of operation.

Save the Monarch Butterfly Car

This Laurinburg and Southern Railroad (LRS) 60’ boxcar was decorated by GATX as the centerpiece for the “Save the Monarch Butterfly - 60,000 Tree Challenge” North American boxcar tour. Kansas City Southern, Canadian Pacific, GATX and several other organizations collaborated to create the campaign. The annual migratory journey of the Monarch Butterfly is a long one - from the Windsor, Canada area, through the United States, and ends near Monterrey in Michoacán State of Mexico. This boxcar tour paralleled this migratory path of these amazing pollinators to raise $100,000 to help reestablish the still-threatened Monarch population, by planting 60,000 oyamel trees at El Rosario Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary in Michoacán, Mexico.

BNSF Flat Car w/ 10,000th Fuselage 2-Pack

This BH20AB-class 89’ MTTX flatcar was used for general purpose bulk loading of construction equipment, industrial machinery, or in this case, the 10,000th delivery of a 737, on its way to Renton, WA, for final assembly and eventual delivery to Southwest Airlines. This momentous occasion occurred in 2018. The flatcar features deck mounted purpose-built pedestals and specialized retainment devices that allows the safe loading and transportation of this unique load. Also included is a BNSF 60’ flatcar used as a buffer car.

NYC&HR Refrigerator Cars in series 154000-154584 have a capacity of 80,000 pounds and an interior length of 33 feet. The dimensions were specifically calculated by a master builder and based on being able to accommodate an ideal load of 800 cases of egg crates! These dimensions would vary slightly for the acquiring railroads. These cars received red, white, and blue stripes on the all white scheme, and ride on Bettendorf trucks.
