Built for General American Transportation Corporation in the mid-1990s, these 25,000-gallon tank cars with Barber Roller Bearing trucks was leased for acid service. General American Transportation Corporation, now known simply as GATX Capital Lease, is a large railcar leasing company, with over 122,000 railcars in the fleet.

Norfolk Southern
Road Number 96736

This 3-bay covered hopper with Barber Roller Bearing trucks was built by Magor Car in the late 1960s for the Southern Railway. It eventually made its way into the Norfolk Southern roster of cars, and was repainted, but retained the SOU reporting mark. The Southern Railway was a Class 1 railroad that operated over 6,000 miles of track across the southern United States from 1894-1982. Today, it is now part of the Norfolk Southern system following a 1980 merger with Norfolk & Western Railway.

Milwaukee
Road Number 3094

Built in 1967 by General American in Illinois, this 50’ boxcar with Barber Roller Bearing trucks featured Evans Load Dividers and a Cushioned Underframe. Milwaukee Railroad was a Class I railroad that operated from 1847 till 1986, before being rolled into the Soo Line Railroad, now part of Canadian Pacific.

This Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern Railroad 3-bay covered hopper with Barber Roller Bearing trucks was built in 1998, and lettered for South Dakota Soybean Processors. The DME Railroad was the largest Class II railroad in the United States, which operated across several midwestern states until 2008 when it was purchased by the Canadian Pacific Railroad. Today, the DME is a wholly owned subsidiary of Canadian Pacific Kansas City.

Reading
Road Number 18088

Built in the mid-1940s for Reading Railroad, this 40’ boxcar with Bettendorf trucks had Damage Free loaders and was classed XMwa. Reading can be traced back to 1833 as the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad, one of the first railroads in the United States. Over time it became just ‘Reading,’ and remained profitable through World War I. By the 1960s, declining profits lead to bankruptcy in 1971. In 1976, the remaining assets were merged with other railroads to form Conrail.

Galveston Railroad – Golden West Service

This flatcar with Roller Bearing trucks was built in the late 1960s and ended up lettered for the Galveston Railroad under Golden West Service. The car was designed to carry lumber, structural steel and pipes, as well as logs and other long commodities. The reinforced bulkheads provide load protection as well as prevent shifting during transit. The Golden West Service program was mostly unsuccessful and relatively short-lived.

Northern Pacific / Merchants Despatch

REPRINT

Built in early 1956 by Pacific Car and Foundry, this Merchants Despatch mechanical reefer with Roller Bearing trucks was lettered for Northern Pacific and featured electric heating as well, to prevent perishable fresh goods from freezing during cold weather. Northern Pacific was a Class 1 Railroad formed in 1864, and eventually acquired in 1970 by Burlington Northern Railroad through mergers, which went on to merge with Santa Fe becoming BNSF.

These Union Pacific® Class F-50-11 flat cars were built in early 1941 as part of series 57000-57299 and feature the M3 Lee tank Load. The M3 Lee was an American medium tank used during World War II. Design commenced in July 1940, and the first M3's were operational in late 1941. This was to meet the need of the US Army to have a medium tank armed with a 75 mm gun and coupled with the United Kingdom's immediate demand for 3,650 medium tanks. The design was a compromise meant to produce a tank as soon as possible and serve only until replaced by the following M4 Sherman tank.

These Southern Pacific® class F-70-2 50' flat cars were built in early 1941 by the Sacramento General Shops. The 70-ton cars in series 79700-79824 feature Bettendorf trucks and carry a military load representing the M26 "Dragon Wagon" and M15 40-ton trailer. The "Dragon Wagon" was a tank recovery vehicle designed by Knuckey Truck Company, manufactured by Pacific Car & Foundry Co., and was in service from 1941 to 1955.

Leased from the National Car Company subsidiary of Fruit Growers Express is Kahn’s series 1029-1080. In 1883 Elias Kahn’s humble Cincinatti meat shop quickly grew in popularity. He offered select meats and sausage varieties that led him to be the preferred meat provider. After his passing in 1899, E. Kahn’s and Sons was founded and his children continued their father’s legacy. To this day Kahn’s meats remain a favorite in many households across the country.

Starting in 1953 Southern Pacific® started Trailer-On-Flat-Car or TOFC service. This service was also know as Piggyback as trailers were placed onto flatcars and transported along rails. These flatcars were originally flat deck cars but were later modified in order to be used as TOFC cars. The 40ft trailers featured as the load on these cars entered into service in the 1960's.
