Built in 1953 by Pullman Standard, this 65’ mill gondola with Bettendorf trucks was designed to haul finished structural steel shapes and other bulky loads, and featured drop ends that allowed the gondola to carry loads longer than the car. The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad was founded in 1852 and operated on over 10,000 miles of track until 1980, when it was disbanded and operations and equipment absorbed by several other roads.

This Bangor & Aroostook 40’ boxcar with Bettendorf trucks was built in 1954 by American Car & Foundry, and decorated in the “State of Maine” red, white and blue scheme. Bangor & Aroostook was formed in 1891 and quickly grew to have an extensive rail network throughout Maine. In the late 1890s BAR began to transport potatoes, and by WWII this made up over half of the revenue for the railroad, while the remaining portion was from chemical and industrial shipments. In the late 1980s, the reduction of industry along BAR lines forced the railroad into bankruptcy.

These Pennsylvania Railroad cars were used in the 1930s and 1940s to help maintain and repair the electrified catenary lines that were strung over the track on the Northeast Corredor and other branch lines. The flat cars, called “Tower Cars” had elevating scaffolding to allow workers to reach the wires. A “Riding Car,” which was a converted passenger car or self-propelled coach, was also employed with a pantograph to help ensure the lines being worked on were electrically grounded.

Originally in a distinctive black color scheme, it was changed to a silver scheme in 1956.
