Rock Island
Road Number 2800

Built in 1953 by Pullman Standard, this 65’ mill gondola with Bettendorf trucks was designed to haul finished structural steel shapes and other bulky loads, and featured drop ends that allowed the gondola to carry loads longer than the car. The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad was founded in 1852 and operated on over 10,000 miles of track until 1980, when it was disbanded and operations and equipment absorbed by several other roads.

American Car & Foundry Lessor
Road Number 47500

This American Car & Foundry leased 4,650 cubic foot capacity 3-bay covered hopper with Barber Roller Bearing trucks was built in 1969 and used in sugar service. American Car & Foundry later became GE Railcar Services Corp, a division of General Electric, specializing in railcar leasing.

Clicquot
Road Number 9120

Founded in 1885 by Charles LaCroix, the Clicquot Club Company was one of the Nation’s largest beverage companies, selling ginger ale and a number of different soda varieties. It was purchased by the Cott Beverage Corporation in 1969 and dissolved in 1980.

Bangor & Aroostook
Road Number 4295

This Bangor & Aroostook 40’ boxcar with Bettendorf trucks was built in 1954 by American Car & Foundry, and decorated in the “State of Maine” red, white and blue scheme. Bangor & Aroostook was formed in 1891 and quickly grew to have an extensive rail network throughout Maine. In the late 1890s BAR began to transport potatoes, and by WWII this made up over half of the revenue for the railroad, while the remaining portion was from chemical and industrial shipments. In the late 1980s, the reduction of industry along BAR lines forced the railroad into bankruptcy.

CSX®/ex-Railbox
Road Number 141948

Built in 1975 for Railbox, this XCF10 class 50’ boxcar with Roller Bearing trucks soon made its way to the C&O Railroad’s fleet, before later getting repatched for CSX. CSX was formed through the 1986 mergers of Chessie System and Seaboard System/ Family Lines, and continues to operate today across more than 21,000 miles of track in the Eastern United States.

Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe

Built in 1963 by PC&F, this BX-90 class ATSF 50’ boxcar with Barber Roller Bearing trucks featured Load Dividers, Side Wall Fillers, Insulation, and a cushioned underframe. Founded in 1859, Santa Fe was one of the largest railroads in North America up until 1996, when it merged with Burlington Northern to form BNSF.

Norfolk & Western
Road Number 57571

Marked “XF” for Food Loading service, this 50’ boxcar was built in 1975. Founded in 1982 through the mergers of Norfolk & Western and the Southern Railway, Norfolk Southern grew further in the late 1990s with the acquisition of just over half of the trackage and assets of Conrail Corporation. Today, NS is one of the largest Class 1 Railroads with over 30,000 employees and operates nearly 22,000 miles of track in the Eastern and Midwestern United States.

Sudbury Brewing & Malting Company
Road Number SBCo 101

The Sudbury Brewing & Malting Company was founded in 1907 by three Canadian families – the Doran’s, the Mackey’s and the Fee’s. Operations expanded throughout Northern Ontario, until 1971 when the company was purchased by Canadian Breweries. The company owned two wood sheathed reefers with Bettendor trucks, numbers 101 and 102.

Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe 4-Car Runner Pack #237

Built in the mid-1970s, this ATSF covered hopper has a capacity of 4600 cubic feet, and carries the ATSF “Q” logo. This marking indicates the ATSF “Managing Total Quality” program which existed from the 1980s until just prior to the merger. Founded in 1859, Santa Fe was one of the largest railroads in North America up until 1996, when it merged with Burlington Northern to form BNSF.

Western Pacific® Bulk Sugar 2-Pack

These cars are converted from two Western Pacific boxcars 20356 & 20385 to become closed hopper cars for the specific purpose of hauling bulk sugar. This was done as part of a joint tariff with Southern Pacific as Western Pacific needed equipment to support the arrangement.

This Tetra Tech “RailAI” track geometry inspection car is automated and outfitted with various sensors to examine track conditions such as position, curvature, alignment, smoothness, track gauge, as well as defects such as incorrect rail profile, rail warp, and other parameters. It can then record and transmit this data in detail and mark areas needing repair or adjustment.

A Class 1 railroad is defined as any railroad with annual revenue of more than $504,803,294 (the 1992 threshold of $250 million, set by the ICC, adjusted for inflation). There are six Class 1 Railroads operating in the United States; BNSF, CSX, CN, CPKC, NS and UP. Founded in 1859, Santa Fe was one of the largest railroads in North America up until 1996, when it merged with Burlington Northern to form BNSF.

Pennsylvania Railroad MOW 4-Pack

These Pennsylvania Railroad cars were used in the 1930s and 1940s to help maintain and repair the electrified catenary lines that were strung over the track on the Northeast Corredor and other branch lines. The flat cars, called “Tower Cars” had elevating scaffolding to allow workers to reach the wires. A “Riding Car,” which was a converted passenger car or self-propelled coach, was also employed with a pantograph to help ensure the lines being worked on were electrically grounded.

Southern Pacific® 4-Car Runner Pack #242

These boxcars were a part of Southern Pacific's high-volume "Overnight" service that ran overnight like the name suggests. Originally in a distinctive black color scheme, it was changed to a silver scheme in 1956. Southern Pacific was a Class 1 railroad from 1865 until 1996, when it was absorbed by Union Pacific after falling on hard times financially in the 1970s and 1980s.
