Chessie System was formed through the 1972 mergers of Chesapeake & Ohio, Baltimore & Ohio, and Western Maryland. It remained one of the largest East coast railroads until 1986 when Seaboard System merged with Chessie to form today’s rail giant, CSX Transportation.

Built in 1958 by American Car & Foundry, this ice reefer with Bettendorf trucks was modified in 1965 to carry beer for the St. Louis Refrigerator Car Company. It was one of 50 in the series 91400-91699 to receive this change. Founded in 1881, the American Refrigerator Transit Company was based in St. Louis, Missouri, and was jointly owned by Missouri Pacific and Wabash. Today, it’s a subsidiary of Union Pacific.

This car was built for Erie Railroad before being repainted and absorbed into the 1960 Erie Lackawanna merger roster. Conrail was a Class 1 railroad operating in the Northeastern United States from 1976 until 1999. Conrail was formed by the federal government through the mergers of bankrupt Penn Central, Erie Lackawanna, and other roads. Conrail eventually turned a profit, and in the late 1980s it was privatized, and continued operating until the late 1990s when it was split between Norfolk Southern and CSX.

They were destined to transport Canadian grain and could often be seen operating for companies like the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, owned by Canadian National, FURX, NOKL and Norfolk Southern.

Built for New Haven by the Pressed Steel Car Company in 1941, this 40’ boxcar with Bettendorf trucks was serviced in 1956 and repainted into the “Large N over H” scheme. The New Haven Railroad was founded in 1872 and headquartered in New Haven, Connecticut. Even though it made it through several bankruptcies, the railroad eventually became unprofitable and was rolled into the Penn Central railroad conglomerate in 1968.

This caboose with Bettendorf Swing Motion trucks was built in 1980 as a Southern Pacific C-50-9 by Paccar, and was among the last cabooses Southern Pacific ordered. It was repainted into Union Pacific colors in the late 2010s and was used as a “shoving platform,” allowing crews to be on the lookout during reverse switching movements. Southern Pacific was a Class 1 railroad from 1865 until 1996, when it was absorbed by Union Pacific after falling on hard times financially in the 1970s and 1980s.

Built by the CB&Q’s Havelock Shops in 1963, this 40’ boxcar featured Damage Free loaders. The CB&Q, commonly known as the Burlington, was founded in 1849 and was based in Chicago, Illinois. In the 1970s, it was merged with the Great Northern, Northern Pacific, and SP&S to form Burlington Northern, which is now part of BNSF.
