This 52’ 6” Railgon gondola with Barber Roller Bearing trucks was built in the early 1980s to a new design developed by Trailer Train’s R&D department. The cars were 2,494 cubic feet in capacity and built to be heavy-duty and long lasting, carrying steel ingots, scrap steel and coiled steel. Trailer Train employed several manufacturers to build the nearly 4,000 GONX cars, including Greenville, Thrall, Pullman-Standard, and others.

Built in 1958 by Southern Pacific as a class C-50-28 drop bottom gondola with Bettendorf trucks, this car was one of 15 that received a two foot extension of the sides in 1963, increasing their cubic capacity for less-dense cinder loading. Southern Pacific was a Class 1 railroad from 1865 until 1996, when it was absorbed by Union Pacific after falling on hard times financially in the 1970s and 1980s.

This car was built for Lehigh Valley before being repainted and absorbed into the Conrail roster. Conrail was a Class 1 railroad operating in the Northeastern United States from 1976 until 1999. Conrail was formed by the federal government through the mergers of bankrupt Penn Central, Erie Lackawanna, and other roads. Conrail eventually turned a profit, and in the late 1980s it was privatized, and continued operating until the late 1990s when it was split between Norfolk Southern and CSX.

Chessie Caboose 3-Packs
In 1973 and 1974, Chessie System painted a number of cabooses into unique and vibrant color schemes with safety minded slogans adorning the sides as a part of it’s Employee Safety Awareness Program. In a further effort to increase awareness, they were used in an employee spotting contest, and the winner received a clock radio. Many of these cabooses made it to the CSX roster in the 1980s.
